Bike to Work Month: Photo Essay
As you’ve read, HOK is big into sustainability, and part of our committment is personal – we’ve signed up numerous teams to compete in national bike-to-work month, sponsored by the cascade bicycle club (see Blake’s posts on HOK vs. Copenhagen and Calling all HOKers). Tim O’Connell cooerced me into signing up using fear of public humiliation as his primary tactic.
It’s a bit of a long ride for me (13.824 miles each way, according to Gmaps Pedometer) and I’m not much of a cyclist, but what the heck! My route takes me along Cameron Run in Alexandria, through Old Town, and then up the Mount Vernon Trail, through Roosevelt Island, up and over the Key Bridge, and down into Georgetown. I’ve done it a couple of times now and thought it might be fun to share with you some of the sights I see along the way (inspired by Justin, Katie, and Yiselle):
- Wildlife in the park by my house
- The softball field where I met my husband
- The local animal shelter where I adopted my beloved companions
- George Washington Masonic Temple
- King Street in Old Town Alexandria, VA
- Pirate ship in Old Town (ok, I did go a little out of the way to get this picture)
- National Airport (which seems A LOT bigger when riding past it)
- Plane about to land seen from Gravelly Point (just north of the airport)
- Jefferson Memorial/Tidal Basin (my personal favorite – and also the best place to check out the cherry blossoms)
- Washington Monument
- Lincoln Memorial
- Georgetown as seen from the Key Bridge (HOK is the building with the big white smokestack)
- Francis Scott Key Park
- Capitol Crescent Trail and C&O Canal
- HOK DC from the Trail
- The ground, immediately before I collapse!
P.S. Team WDC is going to kick all your butts!

great post j-dub
WDC IS in fact kicking butt. Great photos. The canal is beautiful…as well as the office (from the outside). It’d be great to visit eventually.
Thanks for sharing!
I love your bike route! I use to live in Alexandria my 4th year in College so your pictures were very familiar. I loved my year there and now I remeber why.
