HOK Chicago celebrates our recent involvement in Dining by Design.* The Chicago Interiors team partnered with Halcon Corporation to evoke a rustic atmosphere in their dining installation that would support the main mantra of the night: Sensational Design with a Sustainable Mission. The HOK dining installation, or the tableau, successfully adhered to a zero-waste goal and called attention to the raw materials while telling a story of metamorphosis: Branches become logs become lumber become millwork and speak to the evolution, design, fabrication, use and later, decay and reabsorption.
In lieu of soliciting help from a contractor, HOK’s team chose to construct their own installation. The team collected naturally fallen timber from Linda Kanoski’s home and wove the pieces together in a poplar frame. Select pieces of timber were then painted orange, reinforcing HOK branding while evoking a vivid aesthetic. Halcon lent the Mesa table, which reflects the natural land formations in the American Southwest. Glow Contract Lighting and Icone donated the Saggina light fixture, valued at $2,000, that was later auctioned off to benefit DIFFA. All of the various decor items were reused or recycled after the event.
The entire process took 2.5 weeks and hours of sawing, painting, weaving and designing. The HOK team’s hard work paid off as the tableau showcased an unparalleled level of design expertise that adhered to each of their sustainable goals, all while supporting a great cause.
Special thanks to the HOK team members for all of their hard work:
An additional thank you to Linda’s husband, Kevin Kanoski, for all of his hard labor chopping up wood!
*Dining by Design, is a 3-night fundraiser presented by the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA). Dining by Design pairs the Chicago design community with table hosts to create three-dimensional dining installations, which in turn become impressive works of art. Proceeds from Dining by Design are distributed to Chicago area HIV/AIDS service agencies that provide direct service, outreach and preventative education.
