Q+A with Stan Chiu: New Management Principal in HOK’s Los Angeles Office

Twenty-year architectural veteran Stan Chiu, AIA, LEED AP, an industry leader in lean design and integrated project delivery (IPD), joined HOK’s Los Angeles office on Sept. 4 as a new senior vice president and management principal.

After earning his B.A. from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., and a master’s degree in architecture from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design in 1992, Stan was awarded a fellowship to study in Japan, with a focus on comparing traditional and contemporary creative processes. He worked for a black-cape architecture firm in Tokyo and also as a carpenter on an island off Kobe, Japan.

“I have always been interested in the creative process,” said Stan. “Especially how a …

HOK’s Ernest Cirangle on the Design of Cedars Sinai’s Advanced Health Sciences Pavilion

YouTube Preview Image

Scheduled to open in Los Angeles in the summer of 2013, the 440,000-sq.-ft. pavilion brings together high-quality outpatient care, innovative medical and scientific research and exceptional graduate and professional education in one facility. Cedars Sinai’s patients will be the ultimate beneficiaries of this highly collaborative environment.

“The idea of advanced sciences and healthcare combined into one structure, as well as the sustainable strategies, guided the character and image of the building,” says HOK lead designer Ernest Cirangle. “That gave us this wonderful opportunity to create a building that has a synergy of both healthcare and science. This new model of care is the essence of the building.”

HOK’s team has designed the Advanced Health Sciences Pavilion to be a LEED Gold certified building.

Q+A: Burning Calories with HOK Washington, DC, Sustainable Design Specialist Sean Quinn

“I have a lot of energy and I like to move fast,” says Sean Quinn, who just celebrated his first anniversary as a sustainable design specialist in HOK’s Washington, D.C., design studio. These days, Sean is channeling his energy into sustainable design with a focus on – you guessed it – energy. “It’s an obsession,” he admits.

Sean was the project manager and lead architect for the HOK / Vanderweil winning net zero building retrofit design for Metropolis magazine’s 2011 “Get the Feds to Zero” Next Generation® Design Competition. Metropolis and the …

On the Sustainable Road | [bobbleHead]line: Los Angeles

Bill Valentine, only smaller.

Not all of you have been to Los Angeles office, and that’s a shame. We’re awfully friendly and remarkably good-looking in person. We do neat things here, like Parking Lot BBQs, pot-luck lunches, World Cup Match parties and (lest you forget), really creative work on some incredible projects. But don’t take my word for it, you can ask bobblehead Bill Valentine. He’s just left our office with a fistful of memories from our sunny state.
MM BVBill(ette) visited us after the Los Angeles office secured the inaugural “Bill Valentine Award” for tangible action supporting HOK’s Sustainable Roadmap. HOK LA’s plan to encourage …

Women Across HOK | Jan Harmon

The one and only Jan Harmon

I recently had the opportunity to meet Jan Harmon from HOK Los Angeles.  I was immediately struck by her thoughtful demeanor and kindness.  She has a fantastic sense of humor and an amazing smile to match it.  I’d love to kidnap her and have her around all the time!  Needless to say, she has a place to stay/visit any time she’s in DC!

Here is your opportunity to learn about Jan Harmon, beautiful, inspiring woman of HOK:

1. What is your role at HOK?

I am Human Resource Manager of the LA office and a member of the LA Management Committee.

2. How did you come to HOK and why have

TeleThunder is Here!

Certain HOK-ers (ahem, John Gilmore ) have been bragging about HOK’s very cool new collaboration technology: the Advanced Collaboration Room, which combines Cisco Telepresence Technology and Polyvision Thunder Express.  Well, John, you are no longer the only cool kid in town!  The WDC office became the fourth HOK office to open it’s ACR for business.  St. Louis, San Francisco, and Toronto already had them…next on the list are Houston, Los Angeles, and London.

on the last trip, and sorry, but i just had to share, we wandered down to the Howard Hughes Center to do a little hands-on research about California streetscapes. as it was early in the morning, we thought we should stop for some breakfast…at Dinah’s Family Restaurant.

This was an AWESOME restaurant – it’s one of those classic mid-century modern restaurants where the glittery paint on the ceiling and the cinnamon buns the size of your

Hummingbirds Part II

Thanks Nicole for the update on our little bird momma…

img_54351
One of the eggs has hatched, but the little guy is tucked under the inside lip of the nest and we couldn’t get a picture of him. Considering this remaining egg is due to hatch any minute now, we figured we should give it a well-deserved 15 minutes of fame…

While we only noticed the nest last week, the fact that one egg has hatched indicates that they both were laid between 18 and 22 days ago. The chicks will brood for about 21 days before they leave the …

Ever seen a hummingbird sitting still?!?!

We hadn’t either until today! Thanks to Nicole Walden who spotted this little guy…

Evidently, hummingbirds are rather picky about their nesting locations. No doubt the expertly designed HOK Los Angeles kitchen compelled her to select a spot right outside the window.

That’s not to say she doesn’t expect any privacy. When attempting to get a shot of the eggs inside the nest, Mama made it clear that her offspring are not fodder for the paparazzi. At least not yet….

A look around town

I think a lot of people know that I am quite the sports fan. It’s really the only positive that many of us have right now, and being that we have offices all over the continental United States and Canada. I thought it would be an appropriate time to take a look at how they are doing. Especially since most are at the half way point in there seasons, or almost at the end.

Atlanta Hawks (NBA) – Dreaming of the days of Dominique Wilkins and Spud Webb
Atlanta Falcons (NFL) – Did better then expected, but can’t seem to get out of the shadow of a former player.
Atlanta Thrashers (NHL) – The owner is a crook, and the fans don’t know they exist.

Inside the Designer’s Studio 5:
Pam Light – Los Angeles

I could listen to Pam talk all day (and I think I did when editing her interview!). Here she describes how her interior design teams marry an organization’s culture with its needs to create an experience.
