Every year, innovators across the world develop new solutions to address issues revolving around climate change.  While many of these ideas are developed in a bubble, there is a strong need to push innovation further and enable individuals and large organizations alike to take the next evolutionary step in sustainabilty.  The Katerva Challenge arose out of such need and “serves to identify, award and accelerate ingenious ideas that will enable the global community to live sustainably with the planet.”  It looks for breakthrough ideas across multiple industries and practices, and beyond putting a temporary spotlight on them, attempts to connect innovators with a larger network of businesses that may enable them to refine, thrive, …

A Big Week for HOK in the News

Process Zero wins AIA Unbuilt Award

 

The Metropolis Next Generation entry has garnered another award: 2011 AIA-DC Unbuilt Award.  The 2011 Washington UNBUILT Awards Program recognizes excellence in projects that to date remain unbuilt – theoretical and unbuilt commissioned projects.  Congratulations again to the HOK / Vanderweil Design Team!

Integral to the development of this project was a balance between energy conservation measures and design aesthetics.  While this goal may seem evident, available technologies create a unique challenge for designers to marry these two principles.  It took great strides to move from research into development, and formalize gestures into 3D Vizualizations that were recently featured at Design DC, where the AIA-DC Unbuilt Awards were announced.
